ABC Dream Gardens Visits the Red Garden

A new season of Dream Gardens, the ABC garden design program, has returned to our screens and devices this week – and the first episode features a well-known Bates Landscape property.

In this, the first episode of Season 2 of Dream Gardens, host Michael McCoy visits the Red Garden, the famed Vladimir Sitta garden constructed by Michael Bates and team over a decade ago on Sydney’s beautiful lower North Shore.  This landscape, created from red stone mined exclusively for the project in the Northern Territory, has come to be an example of how unparalleled imagination, the use of rare materials and pushing ‘hard’ landscaping to the forefront can create a unique space which will stand the test of time.

Sculptural, provocative, engaging and bright, the Red Garden is as striking on Dream Gardens this month as it was the year it was created – indeed, more so as it has settled into itself, and aged extremely gracefully.  If you’d love to see how this garden has changed over time yourself, or to discover why it remains a leading example of its kind, enjoy the Dream Garden Red Garden footage and Michael Bates’ conversation with host Michael McCoy.
